Health Instruction & Survey
In the Spring of 2018, the North Santiam School District completed a process to adopt new Health Educational materials to respond to the revised Health Education Standards by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). A committee of staff from each school met to review the materials approved by ODE and parents provided feedback during the adoption process.
K-5: The sensitive topics and standards are mainly in the areas of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Comprehensive Gender Education. During teacher training in August, all K-5 teachers participated in a process to make recommendations on how to address the sensitive topics identified by parents, teachers, and curriculum authors.
In Grades K-5, Units 5, 6, & 8 contain what might be considered sensitive topics for some families. This includes the topics of child sexual abuse prevention communicable diseases, HIV/AIDs, and gender identity.
THE GREAT BODY SHOP for grades K-5, Teen Health by McGraw Hill is being implemented in grades 6-8. Comprehensive Health by Goodheart-Wilcox was adopted in grades 9-12.
