About AVID
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID students participate in an elective class that prepares and supports them in their efforts to be college ready. AVID students engage in a rigorous coursework and weekly tutorial sessions to develop their critical thinking and learning skills.

Additionally, AVID schools commit to a school-wide, systemic approach to prepare all students for college readiness. Common instructional strategies and increased rigor are embedded into the AVID school-wide system.

At North Santiam School District, Stayton High School and Stayton Middle School are AVID schools.

NSSD's Journey to AVID

During the summer of 2015, the North Santiam School District began a year-long exploratory process with AVID by sending a team of 5 to AVID Summer Institute. By the end of Summer Institute, this team was convinced that bringing AVID to NSSD was essential. During the 2015-16 school year, administrators and teachers from Stayton High School and Stayton Middle School visited many AVID schools in Oregon and attended several AVID professional learning events. Teachers responded with enthusiasm to AVID and the district committed to implementing the program. In the spring of 2016, Stayton High School was awarded a Nike School Innovation Fund grant that fully funded high school and district-level leadership training. In the summer of 2016, a team of 23 educators from NSSD will attend AVID Summer Institute in order to implement the program fully at SHS and SMS. Principals from Sublimity and Mari Linn are part of the team attending Summer Institute in 2016 to learn how AVID can support their work. The district is pooling funding from multiple federal and state grants, in addition to some general fund dollars, to support AVID.
