Phase One of the Upgrades at Stayton High School

A team has gathered to make a meaningful investment in the future of youth athletics and community recreation in Stayton and throughout the greater Santiam Canyon. North Santiam Youth Athletics (NSYA) is partnering with the school district for a new project dubbed Santiam Sports and Recreation Complex. Their mission? To create safe, inclusive places where kids can play, grow, and belong, using sports and recreation to strengthen community and shape future leaders.

The project will increase access and usability for sports spaces at Stayton High School and Mari-Linn School, for student athletes as well as athletes participating in organized recreational sports and community members through open access hours. Heading up this partnership is a committee made up of Desirea Jackson, David Holcomb, Margo Williams, Casey Dark, Carmela Flett, Sarah Comstock, PhD., Dr. Guesly Dessieux, Josh Hardage, and Joe Wolf.

The goal is to create nearly 250,000 square feet of multi-use fields for students, families, and the entire community. To make this vision into a reality, the team has divided the project up into four total phases. Phase One of the project includes revitalizing the soccer, softball, and JV baseball fields at Stayton High School with high-quality turf, adding new walking paths around the fields, and adding an electronic score board, lighting, and more parking. Mari-Linn School is also part of the plan for Phase One, adding turf to their field and creating a surfaced walking path around the perimeter that would be available to community members as well. The present fields don’t have capacity for all of the school and community athletes and muddy and uneven fields with our Oregon rainfalls make all weather sports like soccer and softball much more challenging.

Future phases of the project would involve stormwater improvements, more lighting and parking, and building a new stadium at Stayton High School, giving the sports facilities the lift that they need to match the pride of the Santiam Community in our athletes.

The price tag for a project of this scale? $3.7 million for Phase One. The vision is sweeping and so is the enthusiasm. Fundraising efforts are already underway. The Santiam Sports and Recreation Complex team partnered with the Stayton High School Boosters for a paddle-raise fundraiser at their recent auction that raised nearly $130,000.
